Some websites require me to program tailor made applications for the site. This could be an email system, online shopping basket, payment system or the like. It is called programming because I write "scripts" in a language such as PHP. This is much more poweful than HTML and is used on a server to do a number of jobs such as connect to a database and collect information and then output that information to the screen, all nicely formatted. Probably the most complex web programming I have ever done was for Glide, have a look at the portfolio pages for more details.
I could program a web application so that someone with no experience of HTML or web design could log onto a website and then edit the pages and perform complex administrative tasks.
